When Bud Kemperman’s health was failing, he moved to the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Residence where he and his beloved wife Dorothy discovered that his room was furnished with a new 42-inch wide bed. Bud and Dot had slept side-by-side for 72 years, and that bed — a full six inches wider than the twin beds that have been standard in health care facilities — made it possible for their cherished closeness to continue.

“It was beautiful,” remembers Dot. “I slept next to Bud every night for those last two weeks at the Poppen, and it was wonderful. He could talk to me. He knew I was there. It was a quiet, calm time for us, and we both felt secure. He had his head on my shoulder when he died.”

Other residents and their families have shared similar stories. Those new wider beds provide more safety and comfort for Poppen residents and more room for visitors to be close so they can share everything from funny stories and bucket lists to lasting hugs and final goodbyes.

We’re upgrading other parts of the Poppen, too, so that each day remaining for every resident there is as peaceful, painless and meaningful as possible.

It’s been 12 years since we opened the Poppen, and in that time, more than 2,500 adults and children have chosen it for their final home. Your support of the Harbor Hospice Foundation has made it possible for us to continue to make it more welcoming, more comfortable, more like home.

Every year at this time, we ask for your support because we simply can’t do this important work without you. On behalf of all our patients and their families, and those we will care for at the Poppen in the years ahead, thank you for your generosity and for being alongside us in this journey of providing compassionate end-of-life care.

As 2017 comes to a close, we wish you happy times with friends and family and peace and joy in the new year.
