Giving Back

After my dad spent his last seven months at the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence, my husband and I became volunteers to give back. Fourteen years later, when my husband spent his final days there, it lifted a huge burden from me once more. I will continue to volunteer as long as I am able.

Part of Something Greater

After my mother passed away, I struggled with the loss and later faced my sister’s breast cancer diagnosis. These experiences led me to volunteer at Harbor Hospice, where I hoped to find growth and learn how to support others during their most difficult times.

I began by assisting with tasks such as sitting at the front desk and handling administrative work, knowing that by lightening the load for our staff, I was contributing to the care of our patients and their families.

Volunteering at Harbor Hospice has allowed me to be part of something greater. Even though I’m still new, I’ve already felt the impact of my work, such as when I started visiting an elderly woman with cancer. Listening to her stories and witnessing her positive outlook has been inspiring. I also helped with Camp Courage, where I learned how children express grief and how creativity helps them heal.

Harbor Hospice provides comprehensive care for patients and their loved ones, addressing not just medical needs but also spiritual and emotional support. Being part of this team during life’s most challenging moments is deeply fulfilling, and I’m grateful to help meet the needs of those we serve.

Compassionate Care

Visiting patients at the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence and other care facilities is deeply meaningful to me. My journey began when Harbor Hospice cared for my father during his final months. The compassionate care he received was extraordinary, and it inspired me to give back.

The staff treated my dad with remarkable love and dignity and even attended his funeral. Their kindness and faith were a great comfort and helped my dad in his final moments.

Motivated by this experience, I became a hospice volunteer to offer the same support I received. I am grateful to be part of the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence and hope to give back in a meaningful way.

Bringing Smiles

I joined Hospice 20 years ago to bring smiles to patients through my therapy dogs. My first dog, Putter, worked for 10 years, and now Charlotte, my 4-year-old, continues the work. She loves everyone and brings joy to both patients and staff wherever she goes.
