Celebrating National Volunteer Week

By Amber Wallace

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, we proudly recognize the incredible impact of our Harbor Hospice volunteers—individuals who give their time, energy, and hearts to make a difference in the lives of patients and families facing life’s most tender moments.

These compassionate souls offer comfort, companionship, and unwavering support, embodying the true spirit of volunteerism. Their empathy and dedication bring light during difficult times, ensuring that no one feels alone.

The Heart of Hospice: Our Volunteers

At Harbor Hospice, volunteers are more than just helpers—they are beacons of hope and kindness, creating moments of dignity, peace, and connection.

“Our volunteers graciously give their time to sit with our patients and their families during their most vulnerable moments,” says Amber Wallace, Harbor Hospice Volunteer Coordinator.
“Their dedication and empathy provide comfort and companionship, making a lasting difference in the lives they touch.”

Roles That Make a Difference

Hospice volunteers fill a variety of meaningful roles that extend far beyond bedside support, including:

  • Reading stories and listening to cherished memories
  • Holding hands or offering a comforting presence
  • Playing games and sharing warm conversations
  • Providing caregiver respite so loved ones can:
    • Take a break
    • Attend appointments
    • Rest and recharge
  • Running errands or offering help with:
    • Grocery shopping
    • Light chores
    • Walking pets
  • Supporting the organization with:
    • Office tasks
    • Community outreach
    • Fundraising events
Volunteer Voices: Stories of Impact

The stories of our volunteers reflect the deep personal rewards that come from giving back.

Nancy, a longtime volunteer, shares:

“After my dad spent his last seven months at the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence, my husband and I became volunteers to give back. Fourteen years later, when my husband spent his final days there, it lifted a huge burden from me once more. I will continue to volunteer as long as I am able.”

Another volunteer reflects:

“Volunteering at Harbor Hospice has allowed me to be part of something greater. Even though I’m still new, I’ve already felt the impact of my work—like when I started visiting an elderly woman with cancer. Listening to her stories and witnessing her positive outlook has been inspiring.”
