Celebrating 20 years of the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence
Why is the Leila and Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence an essential resource for hospice patients and their families in West Michigan?
The Poppen Residence serves as home for people who need hospice care and for whom staying in their own residence is not the best option.
Some people who need hospice care don’t have family members or friends to care for them at home.
Sometimes the needs of a patient become too complex or greater than anticipated by those who are trying to care for them at home.
At the Poppen Residence, families can focus on cherishing their loved ones' final days, rather than caregiving. This allows them to continue the relationships they've always known—as family and friends, not caregivers—during this precious time.
For families needing a short break from at-home hospice care, patients can stay at the Poppen Residence for up to five days, receiving the same comprehensive care.
The Poppen Residence also provides hospice care for those without a home, including individuals from shelters, the streets, or hospitals who lack a place to go and caregivers.
Why is the Harbor Hospice Foundation raising money for the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence?
Our beautiful, welcoming hospice residence turns 20 this year, and just like any home, it needs ongoing upkeep. To stay ahead of needs, we created an anticipated timeline to repair or replace specific equipment and outdoor features.
The Harbor Hospice Foundation launched a $1 million campaign to cover those projected costs so we can be sure maintenance of the Poppen is seamless and equipment is always in top working order. Paying attention to details before serious needs arise is just one of the ways we’re making sure we provide the best residential hospice care.

Stories of Impact
Leila Poppen-Reynold’s Story
“In 1987, my lifeline was Harbor Hospice when my Mother was dying of cancer. In 1983, my brother needed a lifeline as well, in the death of his wife, who was my beloved sister-in-law.”
Kelly's Story
“I wanted him to be here at the Poppen House. I knew he would be well taken care of like I took care of him. That was what was important to me.”
