A proud partner of We Honor Veterans Program
In November of 2011, Harbor Hospice joined We Honor Veterans (WHV) to assure that veterans who are in our care have their unique needs met at life end. WHV was established through a collaboration of the VA and National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization to offer guidance and resources based on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening, and grateful acknowledgement to help guide veterans towards a more peaceful ending.
As a Level V Partner, our team members are educated on specific needs veterans may have when approaching end of life. Veterans who volunteer with us are able to help support their fellow veterans by providing two different services: vet to vet visits and pinning ceremonies. Because of their shared history, our veteran patients have found visits with veteran volunteers to be helpful. A pinning ceremony has allowed us to validate a patient’s service to our country and thank them for their service.
“As part of individualizing our care here at Harbor our team assesses for military background to ensure to explore for potential needs and to explore available benefits to the individual or their family,” says Pamela Wingard, social work & counseling services manager.
Harbor Hospice is invited into thousands of homes each year – every patient and family is special and together with our staff we embrace the stories and honor their journey.
